Full Implementation of the Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food Rule – April 2018

At the time of this writing, one of the biggest news stories is a nationwide outbreak of E. coli cases due to contaminated romaine lettuce. This national news is a very timely reminder of the FDA rules that apply to food supply chains.

If you are a food shipper or in any way handle consumable products, you likely are aware of the FDA’s Food Safety Modernization Act (“FSMA”) and the associated Sanitary Transportation of Human and Animal Food rule (the “STF Rule”). The final phase of implementation of the STF Rule just went in effect in April 2018, and we at Sunset are working proactively to help ensure all our customers’ food shipments are handled with the utmost care.

Sunset is your partner in preventing any health concerns related to unsanitary transportation of food.  Our obligations under the law include:

  1. Written communication to the carrier of necessary specifications for transportation equipment;
  2. Written specifications for operating temperature, including pre-cooling, for shipments requiring temperature control for safety;
  3. Written procedures to ensure vehicles and equipment used are appropriate and sanitary; and
  4. Record retention showing specifications were provided to carriers.

If you ship food and aren’t using a 3PL, Sunset can help manage your written communications with carriers to ensure full compliance with the law. Contact Sales@SunsetTrans.com for more information.
