Sunset Transportation is proud to support both national and locally-recognized transportation, business and civic organizations throughout the U.S.
About Scouting for Food:
Since its inception by the Boy Scouts in the Greater St. Louis Area in 1985, Scouting for Food has grown to become the largest single-day food drive in the country.
How It Works
Every year in November, 30,000 Boy Scouts and volunteer parents distribute over a million bags to residences across the St. Louis metro area.
The volunteers return a week later to retrieve bags filled with over 600,000 pounds of non-perishable canned food items.
The food is then transported to local fire houses where the food is boxed, loaded onto volunteer trailers arranged by Sunset Transportation, and then transported to the local Food Bank.
The food collected (in a single day) is enough to feed the hungry in the St. Louis Area for approximately four months. Strategically planned, the November food drive largely supports families in need for the winter holiday season. The annual one-day food drive, which stocks over 500 pantries in Missouri and Illinois, originated in St. Louis, and has since spread to other Boy Scouts of America councils.
Before Sunset began helping with this event, the food collected was shipped to the Food Bank by the U.S. Army’s 892nd Transportation Company. In August 2003, the Boy Scouts learned the U.S. Army would be unavailable to handle the transportation of food due to their deployment to Iraq and the Boy Scouts were in frantic search of a replacement. When Sunset heard about the Boy Scouts’ need, we jumped at the chance to support this fantastic organization.
Sunset is already starting to prepare for their 14th consecutive year (in 2017) of organizing the logistics for the one-day food drive. Sunset will coordinate the movement of over 600,000 pounds of food, equating to 25-30 tractor trailers loads to be picked up from 46 different [St. Louis area] fire houses, transported, unloaded, and stacked at the St. Louis Area Food Bank. Our preparation begins in August to secure carrier and employee volunteers for the November date, and without fail, as a company we eagerly come together for a great cause.
Through Scouting for Food we’ve not only been able to help the Scouts and those fighting hunger in our community; we’ve embraced this event as a part of our business -- one that our staff and carriers look forward to year after year. It’s truly an event that makes Sunset a more cohesive team with a common thread of collaboration, support and giving.
