Sunset Transportation Supports Scouting for Food in Record-Breaking Year

Sunset celebrates our 13year partnership with the Greater St. Louis Area Council Boy Scouts of America and the St. Louis Food Bank to orchestrate a record-breaking Scouting for Food event in 2016, totaling $2.24M food items donated to feed the hungry in our community

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — On Nov. 19, 2016, hundreds of Greater St. Louis Area Boy Scouts of America (STLBSA), parents, and volunteers came together to help feed the hungry during Scouting for Food, the largest one-day food drive in the U.S. Sunset Transportation, (a national, second-generation third party logistics company), is honored to have served our 13th year supporting the Scouts by arranging transportation and logistics for the record-breaking 2016 event.

Sunset’s participation by the numbers:

  • Sunset’s 14 employee volunteers…
  • …coordinated 24 tractor trailer and box trucks…
  • …with the help of 11 local carrier companies who…
  • …picked up the 19 million canned and boxed food items…
  • …and transported them from 35 Louis area firehouse collection sites to the St. Louis Food Bank.
  • 731,982 lbs. of boxed and canned food were collected and delivered to the St. Louis Food Bank by Sunset’s volunteer team…
  • …in 11 hours.
  • The additional collection from sponsor MERS Goodwill locations between November 20-26 helped bring the total count to the LARGEST ever recorded in the 32-year history of the event – 2,249,012
  • …providing approximately 597,500 meals for local families and individuals in need during the holiday season and beyond.

Sunset is honored, not only to be a proud partner to the STLBSA and the St. Louis Food Bank for the 14th year, but to continually give back to our communities in the best way we know how — through logistics and transportation.

“The generosity of our community is overwhelming. We are incredibly thankful to Sunset Transportation for providing the volunteer drivers and logistics coordination for this annual event,” said Ronald Green, Scout Executive/CEO of the Greater St. Louis Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. “It is an enormous task that we could not accomplish without their help.”

In 2004, Sunset Transportation started handling the delivery and logistics support for Scouting for Food when the U.S. Army (who was arranging transportation prior to Sunset) was deployed to Iraq. Since then, Sunset’s volunteers and drivers have delivered millions of donated canned goods to the St. Louis Food Bank, reaching 500 area food pantries throughout the year.

“We’re forever grateful to the BSA of Greater St. Louis, Sunset Transportation and the St. Louis region for providing a way to help us feed hungry families in the area.  This food drive will help families throughout the bi-state region from having to choose between paying for food or paying for other necessities,” said Lenora Gooden, VP Procurement, Greater St. Louis Area Food Bank.

Sunset thanks the following St. Louis-area companies who volunteered to help transport the donations for Scouting for Food:  A-Mrazek Moving Systems Inc., Dodge Mayflower, E.J.A. Trucking, Jones Motor, Pilot, RichKidd Carrier Services, Shaker Enterprises, Sibic Trucking, Special Delivery Xpress.

It’s always humbling to see very clearly that there is good in our community as we work so closely with the STLBSA and the St. Louis Food Bank,” said Lindsey Graves, vice president of operations for Sunset Transportation. “We greatly appreciate the generosity of our volunteer drivers and staff who donated their time, trucks and fuel to help end hunger in our own backyards.
