Sunset Transportation Transports 1.98M Items in One-Day Scouting for Food Drive

Sunset celebrates our 14year partnership with the Greater St. Louis Area Council Boy Scouts of America and the St. Louis Food Bank to orchestrate another impressive year during the 2017 Scouting for Food event.

ST. LOUIS, Missouri —On Nov. 18, 2017, hundreds of Greater St. Louis Area Boy Scouts of America (STLBSA), parents, and volunteers came together to help feed the hungry during Scouting for Food, the largest one-day food drive in the U.S.

Sunset Transportation is honored to have served our 14th year supporting the Scouts by arranging transportation and logistics for the 2017 event.  Sunset’s participation by the numbers:

  • Sunset’s 19 employee volunteers…
  • …coordinated 28 tractor trailer and box trucks…
  • …with the help of 9 local carrier companies…
  • …picked up the 1,989,734 canned and boxed food items and transported them from 32 St. Louis area firehouse collection sites to the St. Louis Food Bank.
  • 731,982 lbs. of boxed and canned food were collected…
  • …in 11 hours…
  • …providing approximately 575,000 meals for local families and individuals in need during the holiday season and beyond.
  • All donations are distributed to a local network of more than 500 food pantries and banks throughout the southeast Missouri, St. Louis metropolitan areas and southern Illinois regions.

Sunset is honored, not only to be a proud partner to the STLBSA and the St. Louis Food Bank, but to continually give back to our communities in the best way we know how — through logistics and transportation. Sunset begins preparing in late September to recruit volunteers, and our efforts continue through December. It’s truly a team effort in collaboration with the STL BSA and the St. Louis Food Bank to maximize public awareness of the event, and within the logistics industry nationwide.

In 2003, Sunset Transportation started handling the delivery and logistics support for Scouting for Food when the U.S. Army (who was arranging transportation prior to Sunset) was deployed to Iraq. Since then, this event has become part of Sunset’s culture with many of our staff contributing their time and logistics expertise year over year.

We’re very thankful for Sunset Transportation, the BSA of Greater St. Louis, and the bi-state St. Louis region for supporting the St. Louis Food Bank’s local mission. After working with the Sunset team for many years, we are continually gratified at their deep commitment to the event’s success,” says Lenora Gooden, VP Procurement, Greater St. Louis Area Food Bank.

Sunset thanks the following St. Louis-area companies who volunteered to help transport the donations for Scouting for Food: ABF FreightDodge-Mayflower Moving & StorageFlanagan-White ExpressHines Trucking, Inc., Pilot Freight ServicesRich Kidd Carrier ServicesRich LogisticsSibic Trucking, and Trans-Lease, Inc.

It’s always a heartwarming day, no matter the temperature, to see the selfless giving that occurs during Scouting for Food. Our volunteer employees, drivers, and the entire Sunset family are proud to support our community year after year with the STLBSA and the St. Louis Food Bank,” said Lindsey Graves, vice president of operations for Sunset Transportation.
